The photographer taking the Twitter war to Trump 21 Oct 2018, 5:00am The photographer taking the Twitter war to Trump
Former White House photographer Pete Souza has turned his portraits of Obama into spiky ripostes to the tweet-happy current president Inauguration Day 2017 was an emotional day. I had spent eight years visually documenting President Barack Obama’s time in office as his chief official White House photographer, and I was exhausted. I looked forward to a break, but knew I’d miss interacting with him and my White House friends. We had all grown close and would suddenly be separated that day at noon. What made the day surreal was the person Obama was handing the keys over to. It wasn’t Hillary Clinton, as we all had thought. It was a carnival barker who had ascended to the presidency by sheer bravado, bullshit and outright lies. As our helicopter lifted off, one of my White House “family members” asked me how I was doing. “I’m depressed,” I said. “I watched this guy” – pointing to Obama, seated across from us – “every week in the Situation Room, asking thoughtful questions, listening to advice, making tough decisions on important issues. But this other guy…” I said, glancing out the window to where the new president had watched us depart, “is not capable of that.”

Why we should be wary of ending net neutrality | Emily Bell 26 Nov 2017, 9:00am Why we should be wary of ending net neutrality | Emily Bell
Rolling back net neutrality laws is just part of Trump’s giant experiment in media deregulation with little protection for the consumer “Do you want [the internet] to be governed by engineers and entrepreneurs, or do you want it governed by lawyers and bureaucrats here in Washington?” That was the question asked to the American public by Ajit Pai, chair of the Federal Communications Commission, when he appeared on Fox News last week to talk about his intention to change the way access to the internet is regulated. The dark intonation of the words “lawyers and bureaucrats” left the viewer in no doubt that Pai’s rollback of laws governing what is known as “net neutrality” could only be a good thing. Who better to decide the communications infrastructure of a country than a group of wealthy telecoms companies in an almost competition-free environment?

Forget far-right populism – crypto-anarchists are the new masters 4 Jun 2017, 4:30am Forget far-right populism – crypto-anarchists are the new masters
Many are concerned about the internet’s role in politics. But more worrying is the digital tsunami poised to engulf us, as machine intelligence and a rising tech elite radically restructure life as we know it Those who mistakenly thought 2016 was an anomaly, a series of unprecedented events, should have few remaining doubts. Marine Le Pen may have stuttered but still picked up almost 11 million votes. Her opponent, the “normal” candidate, was leader of a party only one year old. The ongoing terror attacks, fake news panic, Trump’s tweets and James Comey: last year never really ended, it just carried straight on into this one. After decades of exaggerated prediction, the internet is finally transforming politics, but not in the way the digital prophets expected. The 90s, you may recall, were awash with optimism about our online future: limitless information and total connection would make us more informed, less bigoted and kinder citizens. But the internet is an overwhelming mess of competing facts, claims, blogs, data, propaganda, misinformation, investigative journalism, charts, different charts, commentary and reportage. It’s not the slow and careful politicians who have thrived in this busy environment, it’s the people with the shareable cut-through messages. Donald Trump might very well be the first truly social-media politician: his emotion-filled, simplistic blasts are perfect for the medium.
